Black Diamond hands out thousands of backpacks to kids

MARION -- Black Diamond Harley Davidson held its annual backpack giveaway Saturday, providing free backpacks filled with school supplies to thousands of students.

Shad Zimbro, who owns Black Diamond Harley-Davidson, said as a father, he knows how expensive school shopping can be and is looking to give back to the community that has given to him.

"We know what it's like in Southern Illinois," he said. "Everyone needs a little help."

The event also featured haircuts and dental exams, free Krispy Kreme donuts and a play area for kids to have fun.

"This is one of my favorite days because the kids are so happy," Zimbro said. "We have the bouncy houses out back. They're getting donuts and sugar to get them all wound up. We've got a concert out back just for the kids. This is a great feeling."

13-year old Country Singer Tegan Marie also performed a concert as part of the Pepsi Mid America Back to School Tour.

"Education comes first," she said. "I do online school. I take it on the road with me, so it's really important. I have my brother here with me and he's excited to get a backpack.

Zimbro said about 2,000 back packs were given out during the event.
