80th annual Cobden Peach Festival kicks off

UNION CO. -- The 80th annual Cobden Peach Festival kicked off Friday evening.

Some folks come for the rides, but lots of others from from miles around for the Miss Peach Queen Contest or the Spin and Win, where people can win a half a peck of peaches.

"We did a little bit of research before coming down here, and we like fruit so this is one of the best places to go," said festival goer James Young. "Once we talked to a couple of friends we were introduced to this place, so it was time to travel out here."

The Peach festival is put on by the Cobden Lions Club. It started 80 years ago to help local growers celebrate the peach harvest.

Lions Club member Mike Dammerman says the festival gives community members time to reunite every year.

"To celebrate the peach harvest and basically the end of the year for the growers, and to kind of help them get a little more notoriety for their product, and southern Illinois is well known for its peach harvest," said Dammerman.

The Peach Festival continues Saturday with a parade starting at 4:30 p.m. and the crowning of the new Cobden Peach Queen that evening.
