Veterans and Gold Star Family Day at Du Quoin State Fair

Posted: Updated:

DU QUOIN -- The Du Quoin State Fair makes plans to expand programs for veterans. The first Sunday of the fair will honor veterans and their families and organizers call it Veterans and Gold Star Family Day.

"We wanted to expand what else can we do for our veterans because they are one of the most important groups here in Southern Illinois and our nation and we want to be able to honor those folks," said Assistant State Fair Manager Tibretta Reiman.

On that day, veterans and their immediate families can enter the fair at no charge.

"We want them to understand how much they are appreciated and how much we honor them," said Reiman.

The parade is set to start at 3:30 p.m. and organizers told News 3 anyone looking to participate should meet at the half-mile track off Midway drive at the fair.

"We're encouraging folks to come out, line the parade route and honor those folks," said Reiman.

Dave MacDonna, communication director of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs, called this the first year for a parade like this at the fair.

A statement released by the VA expressed excitement for the expanded activities and the new elements, including a Gold Star Family Memorial Service, a Veteran's hiring event and benefits fair.

Organizers told News 3, they expect 20-25 different employers to show up.

"It's something that we are very passionate about, that when our veterans come home, we want them to know that there's a place for them and we want to help them find a job," said Reiman.

The job fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m on August 27th. The VA said any veteran looking to take a part in the parade should fill out and submit the application below:
