Carbondale librarian top in state

CARBONDALE -- The director of the Carbondale Public Library will receive a big award this fall. The Illinois Library Association chose Diana Brawley Sussman, as the recipient of the 2017 'Librarian of the Year" award.

She's led the Carbondale library for seven years and has helped promote and grow several programs. Under her leadership, the library has offered more than 500 programs for children, teens and adults within the past year.

She credits her success, to the people she works with.

"It doesn't just speak about me or our library, it speaks about our entire community because so much of the work that we've done is collaborative work," said Diana Brawley Sussman.

The Carbondale Library served more than 120 thousand people last year.

She says the library's programs have become so popular, they don't fit into the meeting rooms and have to take place in the middle of the library.
