Hannah Joy Gebresilassie joined the WSIL news team in July of 2017 as a general assignment reporter.
Before moving to Southern Illinois, Hannah worked in her hometown at FOX 5 Atlanta as a News Trainee, where she field produced stories and wrote for Good Day Atlanta, as well as contributed content for digital platforms.
Hannah earned her master's in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, where she had the honor of speaking at graduation. During her time at Northwestern, she reported and anchored for the Medill News Service in Chicago and Washington, D.C. She also worked on a documentary highlighting the Chinese diaspora in Johannesburg, South Africa. She covered Capitol Hill, events at the White House, the 2016 NFL Draft, and freelanced for the Associated Press as a video journalist at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Prior to Medill, Hannah earned her bachelor's in business administration from Georgia Tech. While at Tech, she was a student ambassador involved with various organizations including the GT women’s basketball team.
Hannah also has an extensive background working in sports. She worked for the Atlanta Falcons, the Chicago Bears, IMG College, the Big Ten Network, the WBCA and the GT Women's Basketball team, where she hosted a video blog and foreign tour in Europe. She went on to work as a team reporter and special assistant for the Atlanta Dream. Her experiences working in sports led her to realizing her passion to share stories of people reaching their dreams and overcoming adversity. The former JCI Foundation intern is devoted to serving and mentoring youth, as a beneficiary of the same support throughout her journey. Hannah is a proud first generation Ethiopian-Eritrean American determined to leave her mark through journalism and storytelling.
