Man tries to win record for world's biggest dandelion

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN CO. -- A Franklin county man has world record dreams for a weed in his front yard. Richard Winning believes he may have the biggest dandelion on earth growing right out his front door.

The dandelion measures about 10 feet 6 inches. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest dandelion ever measured is 177.8 centimeters.

"So basically at this time right now, it's approximately twice as high as the record stands in the Guinness book," said Winning.

Winning's only problem is that horticulture experts at the U of I extension office say Winning doesn't have a dandelion, but a "sow thistle."

Sadly, this time Winning lost his shot at a world record.

"It just popped up and I just let it grow," he said. "Just thought it would be kind of cool, you know?"

But Winning didn't completely lose out. He's definitely got the record for one of the weirdest looking weeds on the block.

According to this website, sow thistle plants typically grow up to four feet high. So even though Winning's plant may not be a dandelion, he's still got a really tall weed.
