Giant City Park releases eclipse viewing info

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Giant City State Park has released information about viewing the solar eclipse in the park on August 21, 2017. Viewing locations are on a first come, first serve basis and are free of charge. If you have any questions regarding this event, contact Giant City State Park at 618-457-4836.

  • Viewing opportunities will be available from a variety of parking lots and designated viewing fields. All viewing locations are on a first come first-serve basis and are offered at no cost.
  • Viewing fields are located in 5 park hunting fields and designated areas will be marked for visitors to set up a small canopy, lawn chairs, etc. around their vehicle. Additional parking will be available along designated road ways throughout the park.
  • Some viewing areas are best suited to high clearance vehicles.  Those with low clearance vehicles or mobility needs are encouraged to seek out existing paved parking within the park.
  • Once at a viewing location, visitors are strongly encouraged to remain for the full event; this should help ease congestion in the park and surrounding area.
  • Visitors are encouraged to bring supplies needed to enjoy the eclipse in the August heat: ample cold water, food, sun screen, fuel and shade umbrellas or tents.
  • Staff, volunteers, and signage will be available to help direct visitors to their destination.
  • Park Hours are from 6 a.m. - 10 p.m.  The viewing areas will open at 8 a.m.
  • Camping is permitted in designated camp areas only. Roadside and off trail camping is strictly prohibited.
  • Visitors should prepare for long wait times and changing weather conditions. Patience and flexibility on the part of the visitor will help Giant City State Park provide safe and enjoyable services to the public for the duration of the eclipse.
