Cleaning up after Thursday night's storms in Marion

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Cleanup was underway Friday on the north side of Marion up to Spillertown after strong winds left quite a mess in the wake of Thursday night's storm.

Likely a downburst, the strong winds caused significant tree damage. One of those trees fell right in Harrel Lurch's front yard.

"Clean up and everything. The neighbor's tree fell down in my front yard," explained Lurch. "A neighbor there and another neighbor there lost a tree."

The burst of wind struck a little after 9:30 p.m. Thursday. A couple of corn fields were flattened. In Marion, the damage left more than 900 people without power well into the night.

"Going down State Street there and around the corner to Spillertown." said Lurch, "There's a lot of trees down. The wind was howling. It was howling bad."

That short burst will likely keep people busy cleaning debris through the weekend.
