Contamination concerns after sewer line collapses in Mt. Vernon

Posted: Updated:

MT. VERNON -- City leaders say repair work is underway right now on a sewer main collapse under the 20th Street rail crossing of the Evansville Western Rail Line.

Officials say the line is one of the oldest in the city and dates back to the early 1900s. The sewer backup is now running into part of the L& N Reservoir.

The City of Mt. Vernon along with Evansville Western Railroad, Illinois EPA and the Jefferson County Health Department are working to fix the leak.

Residents are being blocked from fishing or getting into the reservoir water right now.

City leaders say the location of the collapse will make for lengthy repairs. Until further notice N. 20th Street and Waterworks Road will be closed at the railroad crossing.

Samples will be tested to gauge the extent of contamination to the reservoir.
