Crews make progress on new OLMC school

HERRIN -- Construction continues on the new Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic School in Herrin.

The cinder block walls are in place, as well as part of the roof supports. The school will provide class space for students from Pre-K through junior high.

School administrators expect the work to be completed by Thanksgiving, funded largely through private donations.

"We are a regional school, so we have gotten funding basically through the whole southern Illinois region through donations, and we have a loan through People's Bank," said principal Faye Myatt.

Project architect Mark Dillon says the building is extremely energy efficient, and is also designed with safety in mind.

It will include a storm shelter for students and faculty that will hold up to 500 people.
