Labor union lobbies for 15 cent per gallon tax on gas

WSIL -- An Illinois labor union is pushing Senate President John Cullerton to introduce a 15 cent per gallon tax on gas.

That didn't sit well with Carterville resident Tom Davis.

"You get taxed when you make your money, you get taxed when you spend your money and then you've got property taxes," explained Davis.

Davis calls paying more at the pump one more way Illinois wants him to pay for its problems.

"I don't know, you just get so fed up," added Davis.

Danielle Charlton is fed up, too.

"It's not beneficial to us to be raising taxes to get them out of their debt," added Charlton.

Davis called the idea of Illinois taxing gas at 15 cents a gallon "a joke".

The proposal would reportedly fund a billion dollars a year in road based projects.

"They ain't nothing but a bunch of crooks lining their own pockets, doing road projects that don't need done," added Davis.

Davis is stuck for now, but not by his own choice.

"If it wasn't for my kids and my grand kids being here I'd be out of this state so fast you wouldn't see me leaving," said Davis.

Local 150 of the International Union of operating engineers is also pushing for a special tax assessment of electric vehicles because they don't use any gas when driving on the roadways.
