JOHNSON CO. -- Some Vienna High School students will graduating with a diploma and a college degree. They've taken advantage of a partnership with local colleges.

The college readiness program is quickly becoming a tradition at Vienna as high school students take on college courses.

Vienna Class of 2017 will have seven students who will walk away from high school with college degrees.

"It was really weird and I was like talking to my friends about it, and it was just so neat to say that I already walked in my college graduation before my high school graduation. So it was just cool that I got that opportunity," said student Rachel Kindhart.

Sophomore year, students can take an exam to enter the program.

"Clearly, our students have taken full advantage of those opportunities in getting their associates degree and that's a huge accomplishment," said superintendent Joshua Stafford.

They can take courses that count for high school and college credit.

Most of the classes center on English and Math with a variety of online courses.

Once they enter college, the students still count as incoming freshman but take classes the junior level.

"It's also kind of unique to have that kind of head start, so you kind of know what to expect when you get to further education," said student Emily Scruggs.

Stafford says the program also saves parents money on tuition.

Vienna High School has partnered with Shawnee, John A. Logan and and SIC for the program.

"Seniors will graduate here at the high school Friday at 8:00 p.m.
