Teens honored with youth volunteer awards

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Twin brothers from Marion got a big honor Thursday.

17-year-olds Charles and Caleb Humphrey won state youth volunteer awards for their dedication to the Marion VA Hospital.

They also won top honors in the nation as well.

The twins spend their summers volunteering Monday through Friday at the VA.

"People are thankful. They're glad that people will sacrifice their time to come in and just help our people and care for others," said Charles.

"They spent their time overseas or they deployed. I mean, you see what it does to them. I mean, what you see up close and personal, how it affects them and their families. I mean, it just drives you to do the extra mile," added Caleb.

"They're looking for character, they're looking for service to the community and, I think, patriotism, and that's what was so special about the twins. Their father's a veteran, they're dedicated to serving veterans," said Dorothy Rudoni of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

This makes for the first time ever two people won the National Volunteer Award.

The Humphreys will receive the honor in July during a trip to Washington.
