Hazmat crews respond after oil, debris dumped in Marion creek

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSON CO. -- Several crews responded to a hazmat situation in Marion Thursday.

Officials say someone apparently dumped a large amount of oil and other debris into West End Creek, just north of the town's sewage treatment plant.

Some of the trash found with the oil appeared to contain mesh bags with medical waste.

Marion leaders wasted no time taking action to clean up the mess.

"Our hazmat team has contained the oil within a certain area so we're working on containment right now until the cleanup company gets here...and looking for the source," said Marion City Administrator Gail West.

Public works employees say they found traces of the oil all the way from Mitchell Street to Highway 37.

Marion reported the spill to the EPA and hired a cleanup company to remove the oil and debris.
