WOLF LAKE -- A Shawnee High School teacher enjoys an honor from Illinois for instilling good citizenship in her students.

Jamie Nash-Mayberry has taught students at Shawnee High School for eight years, but her passion for helping the community goes back even farther.

"I believe it's important to give back," she explains. "My parents and other relatives instilled in me in a very early age that it's important to give back to society, so I hope to instill that in my students."

Giving back to her community and students landed her the VFW Teacher's Citizenship Educator Award for the state of Illinois.

"It meant a lot coming from the VFW at the state level to be recognized for the work that I do, and for the work the students do with me," she said.

Jamie won acclaim for her Save the Levee, Save the Future project, where for years she and her students worked to make sure lawmakers keep levees surrounding their communities standing tall.

"She still cares, and she's one of the only people I know that has raised so much money just for the cause and she doesn't even live here, it's just out of care and generosity," said sophomore Autumn McMahan.

Much more than levees, her students say she cares about everyone, no matter where they come from.

"She is a very caring person, for everybody," Junior Evan Golliher said. "Especially for veterans. She's very big on the veterans wall memorial. She's one of the heads of it."

Small, close-knit communities feed into Shawnee High School, and her students take pride in the recognition of her hard work.

"I definitely do think that she deserves the award," Golliher said.

Jamie will travel to Springfield, Illinois to receive her award on June 16. She was nominated for the award by the local Anna VFW Post.
