Summer lunch programs to begin

Posted: Updated:

MURPHYSBORO -- The end of the school year means the beginning of summer fun, but for some students it also means the end of a guaranteed healthy or full meal every day.

"We have kids who will say, you know, 'I'm really gonna miss you. I'm really going to miss that scrambled eggs on Wednesday morning or I'm really going to miss the grilled cheese,'" said Georgia Marshall.

Georgia works as Murphysboro School District's Food Service Coordinator. She says within the district, there are many kids who wouldn't get a balanced meal if it weren't for the school's summer lunch program.

This summer, the program will serve more than 3,000 free meals to those who come to three locations in Murphysboro.

"The more sites, the more kids we reach and so everyone seems to win," said Marshall.

Georgia says she knows first hand, that kids with a full stomach, tend to be more productive and better behaved.

"If they are hungry, you know, you get angry. I mean ourselves, when we think we are starving because we haven't had a chance to eat, we are not in a good mood," said Marshall.

She says the lunch program is funded through a grant from the USDA, and says many communities aren't that lucky.

That's why she encourages others to donate to local food pantries, to make sure families are getting enough food to make it through the summer.

The summer lunch program is for all kids under the age of 18, even if they do not live in Murphysboro.

You can join them at one of the following locations starting Monday, June 19:

Murphysboro High School, Mon- Fri for Breakfast (7:30 a.m.- 8:30 a.m) and lunch (11:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.)
