MVTHS reaches separation agreement with superintendent

Posted: Updated:

JEFFERSON CO. -- Mt. Vernon Township High School has parted way with superintendent Dr. Michael Smith.

The school board and Dr. Smith came to terms on a separation agreement, saying the separation was in the best interest of both parties, citing philosophical differences that could not be reconciled.

Dr. Michael Smith was named superintendent on July 1 of 2009.

His administration received some negative attention recently through accusations of poor leadership, overspending, lack of communication, and more leading up to the separation.

The board approved the separation agreement unanimously Monday night after a 30-minute executive session.

The terms of the agreement include the board paying Smith a severance of just over $187,000 along with compensations and benefits through the end of June, which would compensate Smith for the final year in his contract.

Smith will step down June 30, but will spend the time between now and then using vacation and sick days.

The school board plans to hold a special meeting Wednesday to discuss possible candidates to fill the vacant superintendent position.

The board and Smith issued the following joint press release:

On May 15, 2017, by mutual agreement and settlement, the Board of Education of Mt. Vernon Township High School District No. 201 and Superintendent Dr. Michael E. Smith, decided to end their contractual relationship effective June 30, 2017.

The Board and Dr. Smith agree that the separation is in their mutual best interests and that the separation is best described as philosophical differences that could not be reconciled. The Board thanks Dr. Smith for his years of service to the District.

Dr. Smith would like to thank and commend the past and present community members, parents, board of education, administration, staff and students for maximizing the success of the students of School District No. 201.
