Women's Center making plans for layoffs after little state funding

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- A lack of state funding could force the closure of a center that helps more than 1,200 Southern Illinoisans affected by domestic abuse and sexual assault.

So far, the state owes The Women's Center in Carbondale more than $450,000, around a third of the center's yearly budget.

Now, there are plans to lay off two employees and force around 15 employees to take furlough days.

If the center doesn't get money soon, more layoffs could come and eventually, it could shut down.

"Last year in the state of Illinois, there were 49 deaths due to domestic violence across the state and that's when the safety net services are available," Executive Director Kathy McClanahan said. "If they are not available, what is that picture going to look like?"

The center has enough money in savings to make up for the lack of funding for now, but leaders said that's going quickly.
