Williamson County Board considers demolishing abandoned properties

Posted: Updated:

WILLIAMSON CO. -- Several abandoned buildings throughout Williamson County could be demolished if commissioners approve a proposed ordinance.

People in Freeman Spur worry an old abandoned school gym on Cherry Street poses a serious threat to the children in the area. After several years of falling apart, many said they would love to see it go.

Freeman Spur resident Tim Bloodworth worries neighborhood kids will get injured exploring the abandoned building near his home.

"A lot of kids playing around in the neighborhood, they like to go in there and mess around," he said. "It's real nasty in there. The floors are rotten and the basement is full of water."

He said the building is not safe for anyone of any age to be walking through.

"The floors can pretty much cave in at any time with somebody walking across it," he said. "It's just a major major hazard."

The Williamson County Board of Commissioners intends to take action with a new ordinance on several buildings across the county that have been deemed hazardous.

"It's designed to get rid of the dilapidated buildings that are health hazards, safety hazards, that are falling in," said Commissioner Ron Ellis.

Ellis said the board plans on demolishing between 15 and 20 properties throughout the county in the next year. Bloodworth said demolishing the gym would give him peace of mind.

"So I don't have to worry about my son or any other kid going in there and getting hurt," Bloodworth said, "or possibly getting killed because the floors are so bad and the amount of water that's in it."

The Williamson County Board of Commissioners will meet at 10 a.m. Monday morning to deliberate which buildings in the county will be selected for demolition.
