Illinois EPA sponsors hazardous waste collection in Marion

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- Southern Illinoisans disposed of some unwanted items at a Chemical Hazardous Waste Pick Up on Saturday.

It was sponsored by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Many dropped off paint, old gasoline, used motor oil and more at Aisin.

Williamson County leaders said the event has been a long time in the making, but lack of a state budget held up funding for the project.

County Commissioner Jim Marlo said this is a way to get rid of material that has been sitting around the house and that can't be put in a dumpster.

"Even if you did, there's no telling how they would impact the environment, how it could leak into the water system and damage the environment," he said. "We want to be very careful on things like this."

Marlo said they have not set a date for when they plan to do it again.
