Upgraded Du Quoin pool set to open for year

Posted: Updated:

PERRY CO. -- After years of battling an aging pool, the city of Du Quoin made some major upgrades this winter.

With the warmer weather, the Du Quoin pool is getting set to open for the year. If you're heading here this summer, you'll notice some big upgrades.

For the last few years, the Du Quoin swimming pool has been a hot topic in town. Built in the 1970s, the concrete and plaster were deteriorating and more and more leaks kept popping up. But this past winter, the city moved forward with a major renovation.

"A company came in and put in a liner throughout the whole pool. It comes all the way up to the sides and the edges. We also put a liner in the baby pool and put in this no-slip surface," said pool manager Nicole Heape.

Heape says the new liner covered up the old concrete and plaster and sealed off any leaks. It's also easier to maintain. The new no-slip surface is not only easier to keep your traction on, it also won't get as hot as concrete.

"I'm excited for the kids to come out. I've been working here the last several weeks and putting in a lot of hours and the kids will come up to the fence and ask when you guys are opening and what's going on. And that's what this is for. It's for them. It's for the community," said Heape.

Heape hopes the new upgrades means more people come out to soak up the sun and cool off in the water.

While it may seem small, one of the other big upgrades they've added are these steps to help people get in and out of the pool.
