New bill allows schools time off for community funerals

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois Senators unanimously passed legislation Friday that was drafted in response to Chester Community School District dismissing school early to host Officer James Brockmeyer's funeral in November of last year.

"This bill remedies an unfortunate situation where the Chester Community School District was losing funding due to hosting a memorial service for fallen Police Officer Brockmeyer.  The legislation ensures that the Chester School District will not lose funding and that other districts will be able to support community recognition of our first responder heroes." Senator Paul Schimpf said in his statement about the legislation.

Chester School District was at risk for losing $20,000 in state funding for the early dismissal.

House Bill 1254 allows schools up to two days off to host funerals for community members.

The bill is now heading to Governor Rauner's desk.
