SIU students and staff react to chancellor decision being tabled

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- SIU Carbondale will have to wait longer for leaders to name a new chancellor.

The latest SIU Board of Trustees meeting in Edwardsville left many in shock as the board took no action on naming a new chancellor at the Carbondale campus. Instead, the board took action on approving a loan from SIUE to SIUC.

"The appointment of the chancellor for SIUC item is tabled," Board Chairman Randal Thomas said during Wednesday's board meeting.

The decision on a Carbondale campus chancellor will have to wait until the summer. Trustees met in Edwardsville and spent three hours in closed session, with two hours devoted strictly to the chancellor choice.

"We have a lot more work to do on the chancellor search," Thomas said.

Thomas called the recommendations "confusing," meaning different groups had a difference of opinion on who would fit best.

"I believe that they are taking into consideration the full range of input from constituency groups in the Carbondale campus," said President of the SIUC Faculty Association David Johnson, "so I think they are listening to what we have to say about the candidates so far."

But not everyone agreed.

"It kind of eliminates the students actually having a voice in whether or not who the chancellor is, especially if they're thinking about inviting more people," said alumni Yahaira Heller.

The recommendations came from a search committee. Now, board members will interview the three remaining candidates and take a look at two others themselves.

"Cultural competency is a must," Heller said. "I think that as an institution, we have failed when it comes to cultural competency and it's hurting us."

Thomas said he wants someone prepared for a tough job.

"A hard worker, administrator, visionary who will reshape what SIU Carbondale will become," Thomas said.

"I'm hopeful that they will find a strong chancellor for us going forward and I'm thankful that they're taking this duty very seriously indeed," Johnson said.

According to Thomas, the board hopes to conduct interviews in June, and SIU System President Randy Dunn said the board hopes to make a decision on a chancellor as soon as possible.
