Need a summer job? Look in non-traditional places

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- When it comes to finding that perfect summer job, teens may might want to think outside the box.

A recent survey by the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas, Inc. shows hiring slowed and even fell in some instances at places that traditionally hire teens, like retail stores, as more people shop online.

Experts said teens will have better luck finding a job in transportation, hospitality, food service and construction, all of which increased their hiring over the last six months.

But don't give up on traditional jobs just yet.

Kathy Renfrow, the executive director for the Carbondale Park District, said she needs certified lifeguards. She hopes to have the positions filled by the time the Carbondale Super Splash Park opens on May 27th.

"Often times for the youth, it's the first time they might be in a an adult role in their life," she said. "We're looking for that self-starter who takes direction well, who communicates well with others."

Hilary Holdinghausen, with the HUB Recreation Center in Marion, said the center is also looking for certified lifeguards.

"We're looking for energetic, outgoing people who have charisma and are excited to help people when they walk in the door," Holdinghausen said.

Both Renfrow and Holdinghausen said aside from those lifeguard positions, they made most of their summer hiring decisions around spring break, when they said is the best time for teens to apply for summer jobs.

Experts said teens still looking for a job at this point can find them, but they may need to get creative.

In addition to looking in non-traditional places like construction, they advise teens to offer to work nights or even fill-in for workers on vacation, encourage them to go door-to-door introducing themselves to business owners and suggest they let friends and relatives know they're looking for a job.

Experts said hiring at traditional jobs like retail may pick up later in the summer as they gear up for back-to-school and holiday sales.
