Trial begins for man who wanted to kidnap prosecutor

Posted: Updated:

SALINE CO. -- Opening statements began Wednesday afternoon in the case of a man accused of plotting to kidnap former State's Attorney Mike Henshaw.

The special prosecutor in the case of Brian Burns told the jury that they'll be hearing cell phone recordings.

They also talked with a cellmate who was wired to record Burns. Those recordings revealed that Burns was soliciting help from an undercover detective with the Saline County Sheriff's Office about kidnapping former Saline County State's Attorney Mike Henshaw for the price of $1,000 in an effort to get the murder charges against Burns dropped.

They'll bring that cellmate to the stand this week.

Officials believe the case will be wrapped up by Friday afternoon.
