Small business confidence soaring, according to survey

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Small business owners are very confident about the economy, according to a new survey.

The survey, by USA Today, found 72 percent of small business owners expect to do well in the coming year, up from 64 percent two years ago.

President Trump has not been shy about taking credit.

Last month, the president tweeted, "Economic confidence is soaring as we unleash the power of private sector job creation and stand up for the American Workers."

Kyle Harfst, executive director of the SIU Office of Economic and Regional Development, said Trump's campaign promises have played a factor, like his promise to lower the tax burden on businesses.

"President Trump, his campaign talked about being pro-business friendly," said Harfst. "So I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that businesses will appreciate some of the policies he'll put in place."

Harfst said there are other factors, of course, including the location of small businesses.

He said small businesses in communities where there are local resources available to help them get off the ground are more likely to feel confident about the future.

Kelly Thornburg, who owns the Tickled Pink Boutique & Gift in Carbondale, said business has picked up.

"Our business has been great. It's been growing. This past six months has been really good," said Thornburg.

Business has been so good, she moved to a new location, University Place, where she is attracting higher-end business vendors.

Thornburg said she doesn't know if the election of Trump played any role in her business picking up.

"I can't honestly say. All I know is that people are shopping with us," said Thornburg. "Things are looking up, so for whatever reason we're happy they're that way."
