IL House honors veterans

WSIL -- With the success of the inaugural Veterans Honor Flight of southern Illinois, the Illinois House of Representatives declared April 25th Veterans Honor Flight Day for the state of Illinois.

Representative Dave Severin of the 117th District introduced the resolution.

Tuesday, one week after the flight, Severin met with the Southern Illinois Honor Flight board, to present certificates to the 57 veterans that flew.

"We have individual certificates that I want to present to you from the House floor, but if you'll present those to those men and that woman that served us and made us proud and made us the free country that we are today," said Severin.

Severin says his interest in veterans comes from his personal experience.

"My father was a World War II veteran. He was actually on Saipan. He was injured there and as I was telling the story earlier, he and his buddy had a little pet monkey on the island," Severin added.

Because last Tuesday's flight went over so well, the board says they're planning for another in the fall. To help make that possible, they're asking for donations and the same support the community showed the first time around.
