Experts say teen drug use is on the rise

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- Experts believe more Illinois teens are using drugs to try and hurt themselves.

According to the Illinois Poison Center, the number of self-harm cases have hit a 10-year high.

Not only are the numbers of incidents of teens ingesting prescription drugs and dietary supplements increasing, so is the severity of the cases.

In 2007, the IPC dealt with 3,087 cases of self-harm ingestion.

Last year, that number jumped nearly 90 percent.

And 27 percent of those cases in 2016 resulted in serious injuries.

The Illinois Poison Center is calling for a greater focus on mental health resources for young people.
