Franklin County leaders talk about proposed sales tax

Posted: Updated:

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- County board members, are asking voters in Franklin County to vote for a one percent sales tax that would fund a new courthouse.

According to county board member Tom Vaughn, the current courthouse is outdated and money for repairs would be better spent towards a new courthouse.

Vaughn said, the new retail sales tax would not be placed on groceries, pharmaceuticals or titled vehicles.

If the proposal doesn't pass, county leaders said they don't have a back up plan at this time.

"There actually isn't an alternative. There's no consideration of increasing property taxes to pay for such a building," said Vaughn.

He added, the fate of the courthouse is in the hands of the voters.

County board members plan to host an open house so the public can tour the current conditions of the courthouse on Thursday, March 30, at 6 p.m.
