WSIL -- March 7 is National Cereal Day. So we decided to pour a bowl of fun facts about this popular breakfast treat.
Cereal got its start in the 1800s and was made of bran nuggets. It was created to help regulate people who ate a mostly meat diet, but in 1939 things got a bit sweeter. Ranger Joe Popped Wheat Honey was the first sugary cereal and was marketed to kids.
Corn Flakes was the first cereal to offer a box prize. It was 1909 and the Funny Jungleland Moving Pictures Book came with the purchase of two packages of corn flakes.
Lucky Charms has seen plenty of changes since debuting in the 1964, but one thing that hasn't changed, the pink heart marshmallow. It is the only original shape to survive changes over the years.
We all know Rice Krispies mascots Snap, Crackle and Pop, but the trio had a fourth friend named Pow. The spaceman character was billed as a silent partner, whose name was short for Power. He added power to each serving of Rice Krispies, but his time with the other three main stays was short lived. Pow retired after just two commercials.
