Callie On The Job: Shawnee Professional Services

Posted: Updated:

POPE COUNTY -- It's obvious where many property lines stand because of fences, tree lines and in some cases, parking lots. But sometimes boundaries are harder to see. News 3's Callie Carroll learns about surveying in this week's Callie on the Job.

If you're driving around the square in Vienna, you may have seen what looks like a quaint little house. At one time it was a home, but now it's the office of Shawnee Professional Services, a surveying and engineering firm, a company that has does more than 3,000 boundary surveys.

Billy Abernathy is the president of the company that owner Mitch Garrett started out of a camper in 1995. Since then it's grown to a company of nearly 40 employees.

"Everything that you see, every ounce of infrastructure, had a surveyor on it at one time. So we like to say that surveyors are the foundation of those projects," says Abernathy.

But not all of the employees work inside the office. Shawnee Professional Services has guys in the field that are in charge of marking lines and setting corners.

"Our guys love to be outside so they're all outdoorsy guys, they like to be out in the woods, be able to be out and do their job by their self and get out and see the different scenery. It's a different job everyday," Abernathy said.

The field surveyors first set their base. From that base they are then able to use the rover to find their exact spot where they need to set a boundary corner.

Once the point is found, then a monument is set. Three different trees surrounding the monument are then marked to make the monument more visible.
