UPDATED: December 12, 9:22 p.m.

JACKSON COUNTY, IL - Fire destroyed two house boats and damaged three others at Kinkaid Lake on Monday.

The fire was reported around 2 p.m. at the marina, which is located on the south end of the lake.

Joe Hermes said he returned from walking his dog and discovered smoke coming from his boat.

"When I got close and opened the door, it was black smoke, so I called 911," said Hermes.

The Ava Volunteer Fire Department and the Murphysboro Fire Department responded to the call.

By the time firefighters arrived at the lake, Hermes' boat was fully engulfed and flames had spread to neighboring boats.

"It went up pretty quickly," said Hermes.

After firefighters put the fire out, Hermes' boat sank.

"Kind of sad. I've had it a long time," said Hermes.

Investigators say because Hermes' boat sank, it could take weeks to determine an official cause of the fire.

The Department of Natural Resources has been asked to assess the impact of gasoline that spilled into the lake as a result of the fire.

No injuries were reported.
