SIU plans for $1 million renovation on boat house

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- At Thursday's board meeting, SIU approved a $1 million project plan to renovate an old boat house and pavilion.

The renovation and addition will bring the 1959 facilities up to date with building codes and standards.

The building will include an 850 square foot classroom, and a patio designed for outdoor performances, lectures and community events.

Officials says this area should bring in at least 80,000 visitors each year for events like the Card Board Boat Regatta and other fundraisers.

SIU Vice Chancellor Kevin Bame thanks Ralph E. Becker for his generous donation to the project, and says SIU leaders cannot wait to see this renovation complete.

"There is a long list of needs on campus and we gave him the opportunity to review several projects that we had cued up. He liked this particular one and so he decided that it would be worth his investment in the university," says Bame.

Becker graduated from SIU with a degree in speech communications in 1955 and has been a donor to the university ever since.
