St. Louis church donates food to saluki food pantry

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- This holiday season a St. Louis church is helping feed local college students. Monday, a big shipment of food was taken to the Saluki Food Pantry.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated $2500 worth of food. Items like soup, beans, tuna, peanut butter and more will help SIU students who struggle to make ends meet. The pantry opened last Spring after university leaders learned of the need. Administrators say that need has grown from about 30-people a week to more than 70-people last week.

"To my knowledge this is the largest donation that we've had of food in kind donation and we're extremely appreciative of this outreach our university and this care for our students," says SIU Assisting Ability Coordinator Geory Kurtzhals.

The church fasts monthly, abstaining from two meals, then donates what might have been spent on that food. To help the pantry this holiday season go to their website link here or call 618-536-3351.
