Callie On The Job: Nesler's Polar Whip

Posted: Updated:

ENERGY -- Rarely do you find businesses that have been in the same family for more than three quarters of a century. One southern Illinois restaurant is still doing things the same way they did in the good old days.

It might seem crazy and maybe even a little hectic on your first experience to Nesler's Polar Whip in Energy.

Ron Nesler says, "We haven't changed the way we do things since 1931."

To say Ron Nesler  has this process down to a science would be an understatement. The Nesler family has been in the restaurant business for 85 years, and things haven't changed much since first opening.

"We just try to give good food at the right price and make it affordable where a family can go out and eat," said Nesler.

Over the years generation after generation has continued to bring their family to Polar Whip. Some traveling farther than others.

"People who grew up around it liked it enough to come back when they come home," he said.

It's not just the customers who have been coming around for years. A majority of the employees have either been born into the business or have been working there for 20 plus years.

"It's a family thing and I'm proud that my son will when I get ready take over for me. Maybe we can keep this going for another 20-25 years, we will see," Nesler said.

Stepping into the restaurant takes people back to different time. A time before credit cards or fancy technology, but if you ask Ron Nesler about Polar Whip being an iconic Southern Illinois landmark, this is what he has to say:

"I just don't see it that way, we're just here doing business and stay humble."
