Fire destroys barn in Union County

Posted: Updated:

UNION COUNTY --Multiple crews were called to the scene of a major barn fire in Union County Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Wolf Creek and Lick Creek roads not far from Carbondale.

The barn is completely destroyed. First responders are reporting no deaths or injuries.

The Goreville Fire Department, among several other agencies, responded.

Goreville fire Chief Kenneth Swisher said no one was in the barn at the time of the fire, but a lot  of equipment was destroyed, causing smoke that could be seen for miles.

"So between the tractors, the combines, the spray unite and then the hay bales all combined into one, created a lot and a lot of smoke," Swisher said.

A 2016 aluminum body pick up truck was melted down to just a wheel. Swisher said the cause of the fire appears to be electrical, but officials are still investigating.
