Murphysboro shooting victim former football star

MURPHYSBORO -- Detrick Rogers went down in Murphysboro High School history as one of the best running backs to ever play football at the school. His former coach Jim Woodward remembered him as one of the best in southern Illinois.

“My relationship with Detrick was a very close one because he was a four-year starter,” Woodward said.

When Rogers played in the mid-90s, Woodward said he was extremely talented as a freshman.

“There are certain kids that need a little bit more than others and Detrick would have fallen into that situation a little bit and, you know, and Detrick was loved by everyone and there were several families in the community that were always there for him,” Woodward said.

Early Monday morning someone shot the 38 year-old Rogers in the head on Shoemaker Drive in Murphysboro. He ended up in a St. Louis hospital where he later died. Meantime, police continue their search for shooting suspect Juwan Jackson.

Woodward said he doesn't know how Rogers' life unfolded after high school.

“So many times in our society today people don’t have role models, don’t have people that care for them and that’s one of the big things I love about athletics,” Woodward said.

He said violence in big cities such as Chicago or New York can make people numb.

“But then when it happens in your own back yard and it happens to someone that you’re close to and that you loved and cared for and seen them grow up when they were young men or women or whatever it was, I think it brings reality to it,” he said.

Doctors treated and released Cortez Turner, another victim in the shooting, from a hospital. If or when police catch up with their suspect, they said Jackson will face aggravated battery, firearms, and drug charges.
