SIU opens food pantry for students

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- SIU students in need now have access to food and other basics, for free, at the Saluki Food Pantry.

University leaders hosted a ribbon cutting for the service Friday morning in the student center. Interim Chancellor Brad Colwell described this as way to help reduce food insecurity among the student population.

According to those who run the pantry, it's been open just two months and has already seen major success.

"So we thought we'd start out with just an estimate of 100 students per month and have far surpassed that in the two months we have been open. We've already served over 300 students," said Geory Kurtzhals, SIU Sustainability coordinator.

There is no income requirement for students to access the pantry. SIU leaders plan to host a food drive to help supply the pantry at the upcoming Saluki Football game on November 6.
