Businesses plan for 2017 solar eclipse

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Businesses across the area are already planning for next August's solar eclipse. Tuesday at SIU, business leaders gathered to discuss those plans.

More than 30,000 visitors are expected to be in Carbondale for the event.

Much of Tuesday's discussion centered on how to accommodate so many people, including space management and catering meals.

Organizers say this is an incredible opportunity for southern Illinois to showcase what the area has to offer.

"There is no scenario that I know of, that we could purchase an opportunity like this for the university or for the region. I mean this is larger than the Super Bowl, so this is literally SIU's time and southern Illinois' time to shine globally and we have to take advantage of it and do it well," said Vanessa Sneed, Director of University Events and Protocol.

NASA will broadcast a live stream from Saluki Stadium and are expecting more than one billion viewers.
