Callie On The Job: Cool Spoons

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- You typically think of ice cream in the summer and chili in the winter, but when your business is in "off season," creativity is a must. News 3's Callie Carroll visited Cool Spoons in Marion for this week's Callie on the Job.

In the heat of the summer, it's no secret what sweet treat people want to cool off. But as the mercury starts to fall, some local businesses have to reshape their business plan to keep customers happy.

So that's exactly what Cool Spoons owners Don and Jill Johnson decided to do.

In 2011, they opened their first store in Carbondale. Then when they expanded to Marion in April of 2015, they wanted to create enough space to do more than just frozen summer treats.

"Knowing that it does get colder here and it's not 80 degrees all the time, we needed something else to bring people in and to serve," Jill Johnson said.

Cool Spoons offers seasonal toppings and frozen treat flavors. They carry cheesecake and pumpkin pie flavors for fall, then transition to peppermint and red velvet flavors after Thanksgiving.

Seasonal flavors help keep business steady, but the Johnsons wanted to have other products available to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.

"If it would be too cold for you we still have the caramel apples, we still have fudge and I have a few baked items that we make," Johnson said.

Other than finding popular items for each season, Cool Spoons has one motto they live by year around.

"Always having a pleasant smile, always asking people, always talking to people and a clean store. If we've got those two things and we've got a good product, which we do, it will be bringing people back," Johnson said.
