Former union treasurer pleads guilty to embezzlement, theft

Posted: Updated:

WSIL -- A former AFSCME treasurer has pleaded guilty to embezzling union dues.

Jeffrey Magelitz, 44, of Chester, was treasurer of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Local 415 in Vienna from January 2012 through June 2013. AFSCME Local 415 represents employees at the Vienna Correctional Center.

Federal prosecutors said Magelitz embezzled approximately $30,000 and cashed unauthorized checks for himself, forging the signatures of the president and vice-president of the union on the checks. Magelitz also submitted a false annual report which contained the forged signature of the president and falsely reported the amount of money he received during the year.

During a court appearance Wednesday in Benton, Magelitz pleaded guilty to embezzlement and theft from a labor union and filing a false report with the Department of Labor.

Sentencing is set for December 7. Magelitz faces up to six years in prison and a fine of up to $350,000.
