Callie On The Job: Mary Lou's Grill

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- A breakfast staple dating back to 1962 is still serving the original gravy recipe for its famous biscuits and gravy. News 3's Callie Carroll visits Mary Lou's Grill in Carbondale in this week's Callie On The Job.

Mary Lou's Grill in Carbondale is known for two things -- complimentary biscuits and gravy and only accepting cash.

Mary Lou's opened in 1962 with just 13 bar stools. In 1990, Marilynn Martin and her husband Robert took over the place from her mother, Mary Lou.

"I never thought I'd be the one. I worked at Kroger and went to college and did all of this stuff, and my mom would call me wanting to come and help her out, and I would be so sick to my stomach, I'd be in the bathroom not wanting to come out in front of people," explained Marilynn.

Since then, Marilynn has warmed up to being in front of customers. She owns and manages the grill.

Mary Lou's is open Tuesday - Saturday from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m.
