Callie On The Job: SIC Welding Program

Posted: Updated:

HARRISBURG -- Welding is typically thought of as being used industrially, but as News 3's Callie Carroll finds out, it has many more uses. Callie heads to the welding program at Southeastern Illinois College for this week's Callie on the Job.

The welding program at SIC offers students hands-on training and teaches them what they need to become professional welders.

Callie found out that welding can be used to make all kinds of creative art projects.

Welding instructor Mark Thomas says, "You see something online or you see something at an art show and say, 'Oh, I wish I could do that. That would look so good.' You can do that with different cutting tools and things like that. It's pretty simple."

SIC Welding student Jessica Miles has made a number of projects since she has learned different techniques.

"It was something different and I knew that most women don't do it and I wanted to show that women can do almost anything men can," said Miles.

The most important thing Thomas stresses is for his students to take pride in their work and to continue to practice until they can get it right every time.

"If you're the only one who will ever see this weld way down deep in a hole, I want to make sure you take pride in your work. One you know that its going to hold and it looks good, too. Because you know in your heart that you want to do a good job each and every day," Thomas said.
