Callie On The Job: SIU Basketball Camp

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- Typically, when Callie is on the job she runs into work that she's not too great at, like trying to make an ice cream cone. But she may have actually found a job that's on her level. This week, she attended the SIU Elementary Basketball Camp.

From October to March, SIU Head Basketball Coach Barry Hinson is serious, focused and intense. But give him a few months after the season is over, and you see a more goofy side of him.

This week, future Salukis are learning skills at summer basketball camp.

"The most important thing is you gotta have fun, because if you're not having fun, then you don't want to do anything." said Hinson.

So News 3's Callie Carroll wanted to join in on the fun. She practiced dribbling, shooting and ball handling. She even got to compete in some of the games.

But besides learning skills, Coach Hinson also gives the campers nightly homework assignments.

Those assignments range from cleaning your room to paying it forward with a nice gesture, and even interviewing someone such as a parent to find out more about them.

"The most important thing about athletics and competition is it prepares you for life. Everybody loves discipline. They might not tell you that but they do and everybody needs order in their life so everything we do has a pattern to it." said Hinson.
