WSIL – Local dentists provided free dental care on Friday at University Place Dental in Carbondale.
Dentists Bryan Goldesberry, who owns the Carbondale practice, John Lee, whose office is in Carterville, and Fred Gustave, an oral surgeon in Carbondale, put on the charity event.
This is the fourth year the event has been held in May at the Carbondale location.
“We just feel it is important as part of the community to give back because I know not everyone can afford dentistry, and so this is just an opportunity we provide every year to allow those who have the need but aren’t able to afford it, to get the treatment that they need,” Goldesberry said.
The event helped more than 60 people get fillings or have extractions. The event was scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tammy Donoho, a business administrator for the event, said the line started at 6 a.m. and one man told her that he was first in line, starting at 9 p.m. Thursday.
Around noon, the office had to start turning patients away because the line was too long. Donoho said they would be working well into the evening.
