Callie On The Job: Saint Louis Zoo

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, MO -- Callie isn't one you would typically SEA LION around. But for this week's Callie on the Job she takes a trip to St. Louis to see what it takes to be a sea lion trainer at the Saint Louis Zoo.

More than 3,000,000 people visit the Saint Louis Zoo each year. Since 2012 visitors have been able to experience one of the now most popular exhibits, Sea Lion Sound. This exhibit features underwater views of sea lions, a walk through tunnel and a sea lion show arena.

But being a sea lion trainer isn't all fun and games. Cleaning is an important part of the job. The Saint Louis zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The AZA is held to a high standard when it comes to cleanliness.

Sea Lion Sound has 12 animals which they feed three times a day. That's 200 pounds of fish that have to be prepared and measured daily.
The animals are trained with positive reinforcement, so good behavior means, more fish!

Sea Lion Trainers work with the animals every day. The sea lions know the commands to dance, give high fives, kisses, and hop up and down.

Sea Lion Sound has daily shows where you can catch the animals in action. They also have a Junior Sea Lion Trainer program where you can get a behind the scenes look at the sea lions. Visit the zoo's website for more information.
