Saluki Food Drive underway at SIUC

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- SIU is working to help students in need across the region.

The university's Sustainability Office kicked off the week-long "Saluki Food Drive" Monday.

Organizations on campus are urged to gather as many items as they can. The group that donates the most will get special recognition via social media.

The donated items will go to the Wesley Foundation's Food Bank, which is open to SIU and John A. Logan College students.

Non-perishable food items of all kinds are being collected, but organizers are hoping for a few key items.

"We have a plethora of green beans and potatoes right now. So if you guys would like to give us mac and cheese, canned meats, especially, anything like that, we'd really welcome it. Dry milk is also welcomed," explained Jerrica Jordan.

Also needed are jars of peanut butter, canned fruits and vegetables, soups, rice, cereal, and granola.

The food drive continues through Friday. Donations will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Innovation and Sustainability Hub, at the north end of the Student Center.
