Busy time of year for local tire shops

Posted: Updated:

HERRIN -- Peak season has begun for tire shops all over the region, mostly due to nails and screws drivers pick up near construction sites.

Another thing to watch for is pot holes.

Jerry Brown of Herrin Tire and Muffler saw a Ford Fusion towed to the shop Thursday that needed a lot of repair after running into a crater.

"You're looking at about $150 for the wheel. The tires are about $125. You're looking at $200 to $300," added Brown.

According to Brown, the smaller the tires are, the bigger the chance of major damage after hitting a pot hole.

"Most of the time if you have a truck, a tire with a taller side wall, it'll just bust the side wall and slit the belts," Said Brown.

The best way to avoid costly repairs bills is to stay alert while driving, continued Brown.

"A lot of construction going on. Just make sure you keep an eye on the road," He added.

Brown tells News 3 if you do hit a pot hole, find a safe place to pull over and check your tires and rims for damage before driving again.
