Callie On The Job: Bethel's Martial Arts Academy

Posted: Updated:

MARION -- For this week's Callie On The Job she learns how to teach self discipline, respect and coordination to young children through martial arts. She visits Bethel's Martial Arts Academy in Marion for a day with the Lil' Dragons class.

Rick Bethel's Martial Arts Academy was established in 1993 with its main focus on teaching children. But it wasn't until a few years later that Bethel realized their was a need for martial arts for even younger children. In 2000, a company hired Rick to create a martial arts curriculum for preschool aged kids. The Lil Dragons Program is offered to kids ages four to six at both of Bethel's academies in Harrisburg and Marion.

The program highlights eight different life skills: listening, cooperation, coordination, balance, exercise, memory, self discipline and self respect.
They practice respect by bowing to their teachers, parents and to the flags, they practice self discipline by cleaning up the karate floor and they practice coordination by doing various exercises.

Bethel says he hopes all children who take his classes come away with good values and become better people.
