Callie On The Job: Carbondale Fire Department

Posted: Updated:

CARBONDALE -- For this week's segment, Callie spent the day with the Carbondale Fire Department. She got to see what firefighters do when they aren't fighting fires.

Thirty-one employees make up the Carbondale Fire Department. They have daily chores around the station and several tools at their disposal to practice emergency situations. When each firefighter gets to work, they inspect their truck to make sure it's working properly and has the necessary equipment on it. This way as soon as they get an emergency call, they're set to leave. The firefighters arrive to a scene in around three to four minutes.

Firefighters approach situations with the mentality of work smarter, not harder. Obviously, if they can get into a building or a car by turning the knob, that's what they'll do, but often they have to use force. That's why it's nearly impossible to lock a firefighter out of a building, because one way or another they will find a way to get to you.
